This is the first layer of watercolor.
It's been awhile since I have blogged. We have been in the midst of a move. That means moving Steve's office and my studio. We have moved into a cute, completely remodeled 1911 Italianate home with some Craftsman and Colonial thrown in. We managed to stay in downtown Annapolis but the place is small. As usual I am sharing studio space with my cockatiel Sydney (she could have been a star but we didn't win the photo contest we entered, another story.) It's 12:30AM Sunday morning and I have had a streak of great luck at The Green Phoenix 2 with six of my pieces selling in the time it took me to move. So it's back to the drawing board. For this particular grouping I am creating a series of Watercolor Batiks on Rice Paper subtitled Angle of Annapolis. They are colorful, abstract and show different aspects of Annapolis. they are a lot of fun because until I iron out the wax, I really don't know what I have. Some of them aren't so successful. If you don't know what a Batik is, it is a method of wax resist. I alternate layers of wax and watercolor waxing out each layer where I don't want any pigment to soak in. Sounds complicated? It can be, you have to think in values starting with putting wax on your whitest parts and working to your darkest. Following are some examples of a work in progress. The completed works can be seen under WATERCOLORS.
